Beginner's Guide to Starting Reformer Pilates in Guildford & Godalming

If you've been thinking about trying Reformer Pilates in Guildford or Godalming, you're not alone. Reformer classes are becoming one of the most popular ways to build strength, improve posture, and increase flexibility—all whilst keeping workouts fun and low-impact. Whether you're brand new to Pilates or just curious about the Reformer machine, this guide will help you take your first confident step into a Framework Pilates class.

What Is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates uses a specialised piece of equipment called a Reformer, which features a moving carriage, springs, and straps to create resistance. Unlike traditional Mat Pilates, Reformer workouts add more variety, support, and challenge—helping you target muscles more effectively and improve overall body alignment.

At Framework Pilates, our Guildford studio (located between Guildford and Godalming in Peasmarsh) is equipped with premium Reformers designed to support your progression from beginner to advanced levels. Our founder and instructors have carefully selected equipment that allows for the subtlety and precision that authentic Pilates is all about, ensuring every movement counts.

What to Expect in Your First Reformer Class

It's normal to feel a bit nervous before your first class, but don't worry—everyone starts somewhere. Here's what you can expect when you join Framework Pilates:

Supportive Atmosphere: We have classes dedicated to beginners where you'll be surrounded by others who are new to Reformer Pilates and learning too.

Friendly Guidance: Our qualified instructors will walk you through how to use the Reformer safely and encourage you to ask any questions you might have.

Small Class Sizes: We keep class numbers low so your instructor can give you personal attention and ensure proper form.

Layered Progressions: Our classes are designed with modifications and progressions, so you can show up exactly as you are and progress at your own pace.

Which Class Level Should You Start With?

Beginner Classes (Level 1) are the perfect place to start if you haven't done Reformer Pilates before. These classes walk you through the different parts of the Reformer machine and help you build confidence in fundamental movements.

If the timing of beginner classes doesn't suit your schedule, feel free to join any of our All levels class. Simply arrive 5–10 minutes early to let your teacher know it's your first class. They'll explain how the Reformer works and discuss any specific needs you may have, offering extra guidance and support throughout the session.

Tips for Your First Reformer Pilates Class

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. We recommend grippy socks for stability and safety on the Reformer—if you don't have a pair with you, don't worry, we have plenty available at our Guildford studio.

Don't aim for perfection. Focus on learning each movement properly and don't hesitate to ask your instructor questions. Pilates is about mind-body connection, not competition.

Consistency is key. By attending 1–2 classes every week, you'll achieve the best results and can progress to our all levels Pilates classes (Level 2) within a few weeks.

Listen to your body. Pilates is low-impact, but it's also incredibly effective. If something doesn't feel right, let your instructor know immediately.
